MHX Tropical Cyclone Tornado Warning Improvement Project

Tropical cyclone (TC) tornadoes pose a unique threat to local communities, whether they occur along the coast or further inland. The rapid nature by which these tornadoes form and the dynamic atmosphere in which they develop differs from those found in supercells. TC tornadoes are extremely common in eastern North Carolina, posing a threat to life and property that is exceptionally difficult to forecast, often resulting in little or no lead time on tornado warnings, or worse, missed events. The MHX Tropical Cyclone Tornado Warning Improvement Project attempts to tackle this issue head-on by recognizing radar features unique to TC tornadoes and highlighting their occurrences local event reviews that are then cataloged by subject matter so forecasters can more easily recognize these patterns in the future.
