Visiting Greensburg

Wednesday, June 4th

On May 7th, 2007, a mile-wide EF-5 tornado barreled through the small town of Greensburg, KS, leveling it to the ground.

Today, we visited the town to see how it was recovering and to support the local economy.

IMGP5682Before the tornado, Greensburg’s claim to fame was The Big Well, the largest well in the world dug by hand.  Today, the museum houses an entire history of Greensburg, including the day the town was destroyed by the EF-5 and the recovery afterwards.

After our visit, we drove to Lamar, CO to our hotel and to grab dinner.  There were a few storms firing to our north.  After balancing our options on whether or not to chase those storms, we decided to go ahead and pursue them, hoping they strengthen and hook southeastward towards us.  Sunset was occurring in a matter of a few hours, so those storms needed to come closer to us in order for us to intercept them.  Sadly, the storms stayed on their due east course and we were not able to intercept them.
